Tibetans and supporters to hold rally in US capital

DHARAMSHALA: The Tibetans and Tibetan supporters in North America will organise a massive rally in Washington, DC, on 7 October. The rally aims to call upon the US government to take concrete action to address the deteriorating situation in Tibet and help to start the dialogue process, organisers say.

The rally is organised by the Tibetan American and Tibetan Canadian Communities along with Tibet Support Groups in North America, including the International Campaign for Tibet and International Tibet Network. It is coordinated by the Office of Tibet in New York and members of Tibetan Parliament in the North America.

He said a petition will be submitted to President Barack Obama at the end of the rally. Click here to sign the petition.

Since 2009, over 120 Tibetans have set themselves on fire to protest against the continued occupation and repression of Tibet by the Chinese government. The self-immolators have called for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet and freedom for Tibetans. The Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala has repeatedly appealed to Tibetans not to resort to drastic forms of protests including self-immolation.

The US government has consistenly expressed its deep concern over the grim situation in Tibet, and urged the Chinese leadership to address its policies that are pushing Tibetans to burn themselves to death and to engage in dialogue with the Dalai Lama or his representatives without preconditions.
