The Office of Tibet, Washington DC in collaboration with Youth 4 Umaylam and the Tibetan American Students Association at the University of Minnesota organized a Sino-Tibetan dialogue event titled The Dalai Lama Through The Perspective of Chen Guangcheng on 3 May 2019.

The Dalai Lama Through The Perspective of Chen Guangcheng-OOT DC outreach event

Minnesota: The Office of Tibet, Washington DC in collaboration with Youth 4 Umaylam and the Tibetan American Students Association at the University of Minnesota organized a Sino-Tibetan dialogue event titled The Dalai Lama Through The Perspective of Chen Guangcheng at the Mayo campus building on 3 May.

Around 30 Tibetan and Chinese students participated in the Sino-Tibetan event.

Mr. Chen Guangcheng, a Chinese activist detained in 2005 for exposing forced sterilization of women to meet China’s one-child policy, described his thoughts and experience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his vision of future China that can solve the Tibet problem.

In 2012, he escaped from house arrest and was subsequently granted asylum in the United States. Mr. Chen has authored a book titled ‘The Barefoot Lawyer: A Blind Man’s Fight for Justice and Freedom in China’ in 2015.

Mr Chen actively interacted with the Tibetan and Chinese students on the issue of Tibet and China. A very productive Q&A session followed after his presentation.

The next day, the Office of Tibet in collaboration with Youth for Umaylam and local Tibetan women’s Association organized a public talk for the Minnesota Tibetan community on the importance of Chinese outreach work.

The public talk titled as Dalai Lama Through The Perspective of Chen Guangcheng was addressed by Mr. Chen. He delivered his experience of meeting with His Holiness and his support to the Middle Way approach.

Chinese liaison officer Tsultrim Gyatso stressed the crucial responsibility of every Tibetan in the West in regard to forging close friendship and understanding with the Chinese civil society.

He also urged Tibetan university students to use their environment and facility to coordinate Chinese outreach work in different universities.
