During the visit, the Kalon Tripa formerly launched the Canadian Tibetan Resettlement Project at a gathering of over 30 local community leaders from Tenzingang, Tezu, Tuting and Miao settlements.

The resettlement project will enable 1,000 Tibetan refugees from the above cited communities in Arunachal Pradesh to immigrate to Canada over the next five years.

The project was created at the request of H.H. the Dalai Lama during his 2007 meeting with Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.

During his meeting in Miao, the Kalon Tripa explained key aspects of the project: its background history, selection criteria and process, and key implementation phases over the next few years.

The Central Tibetan Administration’s Home Department will implement the project in close collaboration with the Office of Tibet in New York and Canadian non-governmental organization, Project Tibet Society, with which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on December 12, 2011.

Project implementation in India will be overseen by a locally-based working group composed of five members–one each member representing Project Tibet Society, Central Tibetan Administration’s Home Department, and three Tibetan settlements (Tezu, Miao, and Tenzingang).

The Central Tibetan Administration requests the full support of established Tibetan communities across Canada to ensure that this project is successful.
