DIIR Kalon Norzin Dolma Wraps Up Successful Visit to Washington DC

Kalon met with the United States Representative for Virginia Jennifer Wexton’s staffer Mike Lucier.

Washington DC: CTA’s Department of Information and International Relations(DIIR) Kalon Norzin Dolma and Secretary Karma Choeying wrapped up a successful week-long visit to Washington DC and returned to Dharamsala on Saturday, 26 February 2022.

During the week-long visit, Kalon met with U.S Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issue Under-Secretary Uzra Zeya for an hour-long discussion and shared future engagements with the Under Secretary’s office.

Kalon also met with Rashad Hussein, US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom; Nancy Izzo Jackson-A/Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration(PRM); and Scott Busby-A/Assistant Secretary of the State for Democracy, Religious and Labor (DRL). 

On the hill, Kalon met with Indiana Senator Mike Braun’s staffer Tanner Hishta; Congressional-Executive Commission on China(CECC) Deputy Staff Director Todd Stein; United States Representative for Virginia Jennifer Wexton’s staffer Mike Lucier; Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski’s staffer Mathew Hickey; and United States Representative for California Young Kim staffers Sebastian Wigley and Shine Lee. The Kalon apprised the staffers on the deteriorating situation inside Tibet. While affirming the Central Tibetan Administration’s firm commitment to dialogue to resolve the Tibet issue, she reiterated that CTA will not shy away from calling out the Chinese leadership for its current repressive policies inside Tibet that is causing more harm than benefit.

Kalon met with Indiana Senator Mike Braun’s staffer Tanner Hista on 22 Feb.

DIIR Secretary Karma Choeying, Representative Namgyal Choedup and Secretary Tashi Dhondup from the Office of Tibet accompanied Kalon in the meetings at the State Department and on the hill. 

Kalon also met virtually with Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s staffer Reva Price and briefed her about the upcoming Sikyong’s visit to Washington DC. In another meeting, Kalon met with Ellen Bork, President of the Committee for Freedom in Hongkong and a former member of the Board of Directors of ICT. Kalon also visited the International Campaign for Tibet(ICT) and met with ICT Interim President Bhuchung K. Tsering, Vice President Tencho Gyatso, Government Relation Director Franz Matzner and staffers at the office. ICT’s President, Vice-President and Government Relation Director briefed Kalon about ICT’s Tibet advocacy works and how ICT is collaborating with the Office of Tibet and CTA to achieve the common goal. 

VOA Tibetan Service Director Kasur Tethong Tenzin Namgyal, RFA Tibetan Service Director Kalden Lodoe, and the Capital Area Tibetan Association (CATA) President Tenzing Barshee and executive members paid courtesy calls on the Kalon at the Office of Tibet and hosted lunch and dinner. Kalon also met with Pema Tulotsang from National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and Chinese democracy activists Wei Jingxiang and Huang Ciping. 

On 26 February 2022, Special Coordinator Under-Secretary Zeya tweeted a meeting with Kalon on her Twitter account and shared as:   

“It was a pleasure to meet last week with Norzin Dolma, Kalon of the Central Tibetan Administration’s Department for Information and International Relations. I look forward to working together on our shared priorities that advance the wellbeing and future of Tibetans worldwide.”
