Dharamshala: Tibetans in Dharamshala accorded a rousing welcome to the maiden arrival of the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Uzra Zeya and the delegation from the U.S on Wednesday.

The US Special Coordinator arrived at the Central Tibetan Administration on the first leg of her two-day engagements in Dharamshala. The delegation of CTA headed by Sikyong Penpa Tsering led the delegation of the US State Department to the Kashag Secretariat where they will have a brief meeting followed by a tour of offices at Gangchen Kyishong.

During her stay in Dharamshala, Special Coordinator Zeya will also meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama at his residence.

The Special Coordinator’s visit comes shortly after the successful visit to Washington last month by Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration where the latter met with the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other bipartisan members of Congress, and other officials at the State Department.

Earlier, DIIR Kalon Norzin Dolma and Secretary Karma Choeying of Department of Information and International Relations (DIIR) visited Washington DC in February for a week-long meeting within the State Department and on the Hill. That visit by DIIR Kalon and DIIR Secretary paved the way for the following visit of Sikyong to the US in early May and eventually the visit of the US special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Uzra Zeya to Dharamshala.

During DIIR Kalon’s visit to the US in February, Kalon Norzin Dolma met with the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Under Secretary of State for Civilian, Security, Democracy, and Human Rights(J) Uzra Zeya in her office at the State Department. It was the first in-person meeting of a leader of the Central Tibetan Administration with Under Secretary Zeya at the time.

The visit of Under Secretary Zeya to Dharamshala is the 6th visitation of the successive US Special Coordinators to Dharamshala. In January 2000, Assistant Secretary Julia Taft became the first Special Coordinator to visit Dharamshala. In November 2006, Undersecretary Paula J. Dobriansky visited. In 2009, Undersecretary Maria Otero (then designated to serve as Special Coordinator), accompanied Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama, on a trip to Dharamshala. Undersecretary Sarah Sewall visited Dharamshala in 2014 and 2016.
