Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Reaffirms the U.S. Commitment to Advancing Tibetan Human Rights During an Audience with His Holiness

Dharamshala: The U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, Under Secretary Uzra Zeya, along with the Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for Democracy and Human Rights, Kelly Razzouk, received a special audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama on 21 August 2024, a couple of days before His Holiness’ departure from the U.S.

According to the official website of the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, who also serves as Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, conveyed President Biden’s best wishes for His Holiness’s good health and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to advancing the human rights of Tibetans and supporting efforts to preserve their distinct historical, linguistic, cultural, and religious heritage during the audience.

The State Department’s media note further stated that Under Secretary Zeya expressed admiration for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s lifelong dedication to promoting nonviolence and compassion and discussed Tibetan cultural preservation, the United States’ ongoing efforts to address human rights abuses inside Tibet, and support for resuming dialogue between the PRC and His Holiness and his representatives.

His Holiness will attend a long-life prayer ceremony at UBS Arena on 22 August and then depart for Zurich, Switzerland, where another long-life prayer is scheduled for 25 August.
