Sikyong Penpa Tsering Concludes D.C. Visit, Meets Philadelphia Tibetan Community, and Heads to New York

Washington DC: On 13 December 2024, Sikyong’s final day in Washington, D.C., began with a meeting at the office of USAID with Michael Schiffer, Assistant Administrator of the Bureau for Asia, and Anjali Kaur, Deputy Assistant Administrator of the Bureau for Asia, along with other officials. USAID has been a steadfast supporter of the Tibetan community, funding various projects and programs aimed at advancing education, health, gender equity, and cultural preservation. Given Michael and Anjali’s close working relationship with the Tibetan people, the meeting unfolded in an atmosphere of familiarity and mutual understanding. Their discussions ranged from ongoing program updates to addressing key concerns, making the meeting both meaningful and productive. This engagement with USAID marked the conclusion of Sikyong’s stay in Washington, D.C., as he proceeded directly to Philadelphia to continue his official U.S. tour.

In the evening, Sikyong was warmly received by Tsering Jurme, President of the Tibetan Association of Philadelphia, and members of the Tibetan community at the Community Hall in Philadelphia. The event commenced with the students of the Tibetan Sunday School singing the Tibetan National Anthem.

On the morning of 14 December, before departing for New York, Sikyong gave a PowerPoint presentation to the students of the Tibetan Sunday School in Philadelphia, emphasising the history and importance of Tibet. During the session, the students sought book recommendations from Sikyong to deepen their understanding of Tibetan heritage. Following this engagement, Sikyong proceeded to New York to continue his official United States tour.
