Latin America Can Do More to Help Advance Tibetan Cause Given It’s Position with China : Sikyong Penpa Tsering in Mexico

Mexico: During an address at Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana (UAM), one of Mexico’s premier universities, Sikyong Penpa Tsering said that Latin America can help more in advancing the Tibetan cause given their position as a key actor vis-a-vis China. Sikyong was invited to speak on the prevailing situation inside Tibet at the university on Tuesday, 9 October.

The democratically elected leader of Tibetans in exile continues official engagements in Mexico where he met with some of the powerful leaders and lawmakers of the country.

Deputy Manuel Guillermo Chapman Monroe, a distinguished member of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies representing the Monroe Party, hosted a working breakfast in honour of Sikyong Penpa Tsering on Tuesday morning, 9 October. Deputy Salvador Caro and Deputy Chapman’s delegation joined the meeting.

At the invitation of Deputy Chapman, Sikyong was offered an exclusive tour of the Trillas Publishing House and Casa Lamm cultural centres. In the evening,  Sikyong engaged in a moving discussion with the students of the House of Tibet where he spoke on the topic “The Dalai Lama’s Reincarnation and its Impact on Religious Freedom: A Case Study of Tibet-China Relations”.

The day before on Monday, Sikyong held a strategic meeting with longtime friends of Tibet and prominent Tibet support groups including Casa Tibet Mexico, International Tibet Network (ITN), TibetMx, and Voces de Tibet among others at the House of Tibet-Mexico. The meeting was presided over by the Sikyong,  Deputy Salvador Caro Cabrera, and Representative Jigme Tsering. The meeting focused on revitalising Tibet advocacy in Latin America, with a particular focus on Mexico.

Following the meeting, Deputy Maria Teresa Ochoa Mejia, a respected member of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies graciously invited Sikyong Penpa Tsering to the Mexico Library to witness a musical performance by a Mexican Soprano as a tribute to mark Sikyong Penpa Tsering’s maiden visit to Mexico.
