Memorial Exhibition Honouring 1989 Tiananmen Square Movement Established in New York

New York: A memorial exhibition dedicated to China’s 1989 suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations around Tiananmen Square was opened in New York on Friday, 2 June 2023 ahead of the 34th anniversary of the clampdown.

On the inaugural occasion, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has written to the organisers extending them good wishes in imparting values of a dynamic, free and just society. Tsultrim Gyatso, Chinese Liaison Officer of the Office of Tibet in DC read out the message from His Holiness.

The inaugural session was attended by prominent Chinese scholars all over the country including pro-democracy activists and the demonstrators who lived the suppression. Around 40 media houses were present at the event for the coverage.

Chinese democracy leaders Wei Jingsheng,  Huping, US-based Chinese expert Perry Link and students leader of 1989 Zhou Fengsuo and other guest speakers shared their experiences and made their remarks.

Piero Tozzi, a senior staffer from CECC (Congressional-Executive Commission on China)  also attended and made remarks at the gathering.
