CECC Sends Bipartisan Letter to ThermoFisher Scientific to Inquire their Involvement in Mass DNA Collection Inside Tibet

Dharamshala: Concerned by the sales of DNA kits and sequencers to Chinese police in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, the commissioners of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) sent a bipartisan letter to CEO Marc Casper of the ThermoFisher Scientific, an American supplier of scientific instrumentation, to inquire his company’s knowledge/involvement in the supplies of DNA Sequencers to police in the Tibet Autonomous Region who employ them for mass collection of DNA samples of the involuntary Tibetans who are subjected to brutal campaigns of repression.

In the letter dated 15 December, CECC provided reports of the Toronto-based Citizen Lab and Human Rights Watch depicting China’s systematic-mass collection of DNA in Tibet and East Turkistan to establish a system of mass surveillance. The letter requesting ThermoFisher’s consideration of implementing a ban on their sales to China was undersigned by Senator Jeffrey A. Merkley (Chairman), Representative James P. McGovern (Cochair), Senator Marco Rubio (Ranking Member), and Representative Christopher H. Smith (Ranking Member).
