Washington DC: Representative Ngodup Tsering, Office of Tibet, Washington DC participated in the virtual celebration of the 75th birthday of Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, the 37th holder of Drikung Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The celebration was held on 24th July, which is an auspicious day of the first Wheel of Dharma turning by Buddha.
More than 30 Kagyu centers in North America, under the leadership of His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche, organized the event. Khenpo Samdup of Virginia was the chief coordinator. The Heads of Buddhist centers in North America, representing all Tibetan Buddhist sects and Bon religion, attended the celebration and gave tributes to the great accomplishments and contributions of Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche.
Representative Tsering spoke about the Rinpoche’s extraordinary life journey. Representative Tsering detailed Rinpoche’s days in Tibet, under the Chinese repressive rule, during which Rinpoche underwent extreme hardships to his astonishing escape through the Himalayas to India and meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Rinpoche left for the United States to be with his parents but returned to India to respond to his spiritual calling—to serve Buddha Dharma and the Drikung tradition. The documentation of the history of Ancient Tibet by Rinpoche is a timeless contribution to Tibet. Rinpoche is also an environmental activist and is involved in studying the massive plantation projects in the arid location of Ladakh, India.
Garchen Rinpoche offered long life mandala offerings to Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, and the children of the Capital Area Tibetan Community sang Happy Birthday songs. In all, it was a memorable celebration.
