Washington, D.C.: On 5 February 2026, as part of his official advocacy engagements in Washington, D.C., Sikyong Penpa Tsering met with U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, a longstanding and steadfast supporter of the Tibetan cause and the original sponsor of the bipartisan Resolve Tibet Act of 2024. The following day, Sikyong held a meeting with the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, marking the conclusion of his official visit to the United States.
During the visit, Sikyong undertook a programme of high-level engagements aimed at advancing international awareness and support for the Tibetan cause. He held substantive discussions with leading think tanks on the growing challenge of disinformation propagated by the People’s Republic of China. In addition, Sikyong participated in the International Religious Freedom Conference and a fireside chat at the Atlantic Council, both prominent platforms through which he shared insights on the Tibetan democratic polity, succession, and religious freedom.
Throughout the official visit, Sikyong, accompanied by Representative Namgyal Choedup of the Office of Tibet, Washington, D.C., and President Tencho Gyatso of the International Campaign for Tibet, met with longstanding champions of the Tibetan cause from both sides of the political aisle and pressed for continued legislative and advocacy initiatives in support of Tibet. He further held discussions with younger members of the U.S. Congress, emphasising the importance of sustaining broad, bipartisan support for Tibet in the years ahead.
With the completion of his official engagements in Washington, D.C., Sikyong departed for Geneva on 7 February to attend the Geneva Forum 2026.
